Hello everyone. Are you looking to get into one of the best superhero universes in modern comic books? Well this is the guide for you. The Massive-verse is a superhero universe from image comics which began with the title Radiant Black, and grew to encompass several other superheroes and titles, including: Rogue Sun, Radiant Red, Shift, The Dead Lucky, Supermassive, and Radiant Pink.
1. Radiant Black #1-6
The quickest and easiest approach to reading the Massive-verse titles is to begin with Radiant Black issues 1-6. Radiant Black is structured on 5 issues arcs with the 6th issue usually being an origin story for one of the characters. As such, the first volume of Radiant Black, consisting of issues 1-6, contains the first story arc of Radiant Black, with issue #6 being an origin story for one of the other characters introduced, Radiant Red.
2. Radiant Black #7-12
Following the introduction of Radiant Red, the series also introduces readers to two other new characters, Radiant Pink and Radiant Yellow. Continuing the reading order we proceed with issues 7-9, as they progress the arc that was left off in Radiant Black #5. Radiant Black #12 features the origin of Eva aka Radiant Pink, and also establishes some background for Wendell aka Radiant Yellow. After the Shift story line (Image! #1-4 (Shift #1-4), I suggest reading Radiant Black #10-12 to follow the story's timeline/continuity.
3. Radiant Red #1-5 (Optional)
Canonically, Radiant Red begins After Radiant Black #9. However, the series is optional and can be read at any point after Radiant Black #9. We recommend starting after Radiant Black #12. This miniseries focuses on Radiant Red and continues her story as left off from Radiant Black #9. This miniseries is set before the events of Radiant Black #10. It also highlights Shift's exploits before assembling a Radiant Rogue Fab Five crew of his own.
4. Shift #1-4 (Optional, Origin of Shift)
The Shift story line is spread out over 4 'parts' in the first four issues of the 'Image!' series from Image comics. This story focuses on Shift (aka Guy), and establishes the Radiant Rogues (Radiant Black villains) that we encounter in the issues prior (Radiant Black #9). This series also delves into how these rogues gained their "branding and franchising" while also establishing connections to the greater Massive-verse via characters/organizations such as Morrow, who will appear in other Massive-verse books down the line. Canonically, this is the first appearance of João Dos Santos aka Accel. However, he did appear in Radiant Black #13, which released before Image! #2 (Shift Part 2 ft. Accel).
5. Supermassive #1
The conclusion of Radiant Black #12 prepares readers for Supermassive #1, the blockbuster event which features new Massive-verse characters banding together in a one-shot oversized issue. These characters include: Radiant Black, Rogue Sun (first introduced in this issue), and Inferno Girl Red (first introduced in this issue). In addition, Supermassive teases the first cameo appearance of a new character addition to the Massive-verse roster, Bibiana Lopez Yang aka The Dead Lucky, who receives her own ongoing series later in 2022.
6. Rogue Sun / The Dead Lucky (Optional)
This point of your Massive-verse reading journey represents the perfect opportunity to begin reading Rogue Sun and The Dead Lucky. This is because the characters were just introduced in Supermassive #1. However, this is completely optional. Michael Busuttil, editor and designer of the Massive-verse titles, explained that readers are not required to read all titles to keep up with the events of any one title. This means that if you are interested in reading exclusively about Radiant Black, then you simply can read Radiant Black without worrying about missing out on anything in other titles like Rogue Sun, or The Dead Lucky.
Rogue Sun:
Rogue Sun follows the events of Supermassive and explores the tale of a superhero legacy through the perspective of a teenager who has a troubled relationship with his estranged father. Dylan Siegel inherits the Rogue Sun mantle after discovering that it belonged to the father that abandoned him. The Rogue Sun is tasked with protecting the earth from supernatural threats. Now it is up to Dylan to balance being a teenager and a badass superhero.
The Dead Lucky:
The Dead Lucky is about Bibiana Lopez-Yang, a former soldier with PTSD and unique powers that involve electrical currents. Bibiana returns home to San Francisco to discover that the city is changing, as tech giant Morrow is leading the forefront with their peacekeeper robots and authoritarian control. Consequently, the Salvation gang has arisen to challenge Morrow's authority, acting as a resistance. Thus, Bibi is caught between multiple worlds; all while she attempts to reconcile her own issues with the living and the dead.
As fans of the Massive-verse, we have been keeping up with all the titles. I highly recommend checking out the first issue of Rogue Sun and The Dead Lucky, as readers of Radiant Black might discover other titles that might interest them.
8. Radiant Black #13-18
At this point, the reading list simply continues with Radiant Black #13-16. Radiant Black #18 teases another origin story, this time focusing on Wendell aka Radiant Yellow, and taking place across 4 different eras!
Since Supermassive, the characters have yet to crossover in each other's books. However, news and rumblings from C2E2 and SDCC highlight that a crossover may happen soon.
Thank you for checking out the Massive-verse Recommended Reading Guide. This guide will be updated as issues continue to release.
While we are readers and love the Massive-verse and everything about it, some of us are also collectors that are after those first appearances! Don't worry, The Radiant Black Podcast has got you covered! This is a comprehensive list featuring all the 'Key' moments from the Massive-verse. In this case, 'Key' moments are defined as but not limited to: first appearances of characters, first cover appearances of covers, an iconic cover or cover tribute/homage, a special variant or edition (RB #10 blacklight for example), etc. The list will be revised as more Massive-verse issues continue to release.
